An inspiring movie about one man's determination to abolish the slave trade. Based on the true account of anti-slavery advocator, William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd), this film logs his lengthy struggle in the late 18th century to pass an anti-slave trade law. In the course of his fight against the English establishment, he encounters severe opposition from members of Parliament. Fortunately, dedicated support from his best friend, Prime Minister William Pitt (Benedict Cumberbatch), a reformed slave ship captain (Albert Finney) and several others, help him move closer to his dream.

Many would prefer the screen version of the history of the abolishment of the slave trade than reading it in small print in a dusty corner of a library. However, although ''Amazing Grace'' is a good representation of what went on in the 18th century, the movie merely highlights some key points in the fight against slavery. This comes as no surprise because director Michael Apted had to condense 25 years into a two-hour movie.

The movie is about one man's dream to pass a bill against the slave trade in Britain. It focuses on the mini successes and repeated failures that William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd), a key parliament abolitionist, experienced in his fight. His battle is with a parliament that believes the abolishment of slavery would upset the stability of Britain's economy. At one point, he becomes demoralised and takes the back seat. However, the passion of the beautiful young Barbara Spooner (Romola Garai), who later becomes his wife, urges him on in his quest with a renewed strength. His battle would also not be possible without support of his good friends, Prime Minister William Pitt (Benedict Cumberbatch), and Thomas Clarkson (Rufus Sewell).

A huge perk of ''Amazing Grace'' is its array of respectable British cast. The constant interaction between Wilberforce's gentle compassion and fierce passion make it easy for audiences to accept Ioan Gruffudd's (''Fantastic Four'') role as Wilberforce. A cameo by Albert Finney (reformed slave trade captain) makes a large impact as his remorse envelops the screen and touched our hearts as he speaks of his guilt. Additionally, relative newcomer Cumberbatch steals our hearts with eyes filled with deep compassion for his best friend, Wilberforce and his beliefs.

Unfortunately, given the limited time to expand on all the information, this movie merely grazes character developments of all the key people involved. Namely, the relationship between close friends Pitt and Wilberforce is starved of much development. The passionate encouragement of Spooner that led Wilberforce into action, again, isn't given enough credit. Nevertheless, the movie allows each character to illuminate their key qualities, thus enabling audiences to have an idea of how each character played their role in the fight against slavery.

The script is entertaining even though the trials and struggles were very real. It reflected how during tough times, these men of honour did not fall short of exhibiting their wit. The movie is able to elicit frequent laughter; hence, it is not dry or over sentimental. Moreover, it is able to provide a balanced look at what happened, displaying the different emotions with fairness.

Finally, the film moves at a rapid pace, switching between the past and present. This enhances the tension and determination, making this film intense and exciting. The beauty emerges in its inspirational quality of the determination of one man to pursue his beliefs despite the gargantuan change that he is fighting for.
