What I loved most: -
What I really hated: a lot!
Oh God! this is bad! i really have no idea why this movie gets positive reviews. This is the worst Malay horror movies (it shouln't be called horror anyway) i have ever watched. It got a dull and boring storyline. It is not scary at all.How can this movie get a theaterical release? It should have been sent straight on TV.The acting is below average especially from the newcomer. He really cannot act!!The only one who does a good job is Ida Nerina as she does her part pretty well.I must commend that! Erra fazira should just stick to Sembilu or any movies related to that. She shouldn't appear in any horror movies as she doesn't know how to scream. The ghost is also not scary at all.He is ala T oshio in Ju-On but in unscary look. When he starts to make his first appearance,i feel like like leaving the cinema. There is no creepy atmosphere and no attempt at scares the audiences.Even it does,it fails badly.I have wasted ten bucks and almost two hours sitting through watching this dull horror movie.I don't mean to slap malay movie industry, but if this is what we call a good movie,we are all wrong. If you happen to see the VCD of this movie on the neareast store, please don't buy it.It will only waste your monye. Please spend your money on other movie instead. What a shame !

The constant appearance of a child - was it her mere hallucination or was it for real? That was the question in this emotionally driven local horror, "Anak".
Nita, the leading role in "Anak" played by our very own drama queen, Erra Fazira, is the kind of character that is presented in its very own way. The performance of Erra in this movie is absolutely different from what we are used to. Watching Erra play Nita in "Anak" highlights another facet of Erra as an actress. Although she has been in the film industry for more than 10 years, Malaysian film lovers have yet to see her in exploring with a highly challenging role. Only after watching "Anak", I can attest to her true acting talents.
On the other hand, Ida Nerina also presents another piece of her forte. Playing the role of Kay (Nita's cousin), Ida fits the character of a model very well. There were a few scenes that highlight the intensity of Ida's portrayal. She was flamboyant, posh and arrogant - perfect for a model. There was a scene where several guys were about to rape Nita while Kay was crying out of guilt because she was the one behind the plot. This scene was truly dramatic that was brilliantly done by Ida.
Besides the performances, the idea behind "Anak" is something quite cliche actually. We've seen it all in many Japanese, Thai and even Korean horror flicks. However, what is special about "Anak" is the sound visualisation and narration of the story that differentiates it from the typical scare tactics. The approach made by the director, Barney Lee, is very witty yet accessible to people from all walks of life. Although I was generally enticed by the storyline and its presentation, it is undeniable that once in a while the storyline seems to be a bit slow. Nonetheless, it was well made up with the acting of the cast especially Erra, Ida and Phillip. Phillip Jusuf, although a newcomer to the Malaysian screen, has managed to put in quite a decent show but if it weren't for Erra and Ida, the film would otherwise lead to inevitable boredom.
From a cinematography perspective, this film is well shot but that's no surprise since the director is an established gaffer in advertising and commercial making. The colour scheme fits very well with the theme of the movie, creating a more ghoulish and gloomy mood, which was gently underlining the film.
Overall, "Anak" is a different style of a horror movie, strongly built with an emphasis on emotionally driven ingredients. It is a worthwhile watch for sure.
