After K.V. Anand's feature film debut "Kana Kandein", this time around he brings the scenario behind the lives of smuggling groups and their daily activities.

Pursuing a postgraduate course, Deva (Surya) a typical youth lives with his mother (Renuka) who aspires him to join the government service one day. Instead, he works as a courier for Das (Prabhu), who brings in smuggled articles from abroad into Chennai without getting caught by customs officials. Their rival Kamalesh (Akashdeep Saigal) goes to extremes to defeat them, thus leading to a bloody confrontation as they go for each other's throats. Meanwhile, Deva falls in love with his friend's sister Yamuna (Tamanna) and brings relief from the violence through her song and dance sequences. How Deva defeats his enemy and resumes his normal life is the rest of story.

Surya and Tamanna make a good pair, as their romance is both funny and enjoyable. Surya has shown a convincing performance as an action hero cum romantic lover, while his energetic and comedic performance takes the film to a whole new level. The beautiful Tamanna on the other hand, has no major role to play besides appearing in a couple of songs. While actor Prabhu is very natural and handles his role with much maturity.

Harris Jayaraj's songs are appealing and the background score flows well with the movie. The introduction song 'Pala Pala' is enjoyable and the 'Nenje Nenje' song is melodious, showcasing exotic sceneries, which hardly ever is featured in Tamil films. The car chase and action sequences are excellently choreographed, especially those done on the streets of Congo.

Although the storyline sounds familiar, the well-made narration and captivating visuals provide the necessary plus points to watch the film. "Ayyan" does prove itself to be an absolute action entertainer.
