After spending a long time in production (from 2005-2008), K. S. Ravikumar's much-anticipated movie "Dasavatharam" is out! Kamal Haasan plays a total of 10 characters in the film! While the plot is kept under tight wraps, it is understood that the movie is reported to be the costliest ever in Tamil film industry. It is also reputed to boast Hollywood-standard special effects and that it is the most exciting thing to have happened since "Sivaji The Boss" in 2007.

It looks like "Dasavatharam" has been over-hyped to make it appear so superb and in a class of its own. In reality, everything that has been said about this so-called magnificent and record-breaking Tamil movie is way off track. After having watched the film, it's a far cry from the high expectations for K.S Ravikumar's latest artwork. The title "Dasavatharam", which literally means the ten reincarnations of Lord Vishnu, has been aptly used to indicate the ten different roles of Kamal Haasan who is hailed as "Ulaga Nayagan" a.k.a Universal Hero.

Although Kamal Haasan's performance in playing the ten different roles is up to the highest of expectations, the movie itself is so painful to be watched. I frankly loathe it for being such a big but hideous attempt of a superb movie. Despite its big budget, the so-called bombastic CGI effects and superb story, "Dasavatharam" is merely mediocre. What a frustration all in all!

Worse still is the make-up. It is one of the most painful things in the movie to describe. What were they even thinking? The US President a.k.a Mr George Bush looks so silly with the make-up, Christian Fletcher's ( not of the "Mutiny on the Bounty" fame) weird appearance and the worst of the ten roles - is the Japanese ninja, Shingen Narahashi.

Admittedly, Kamal has done an impressive role-playing in all the ten roles but the make-up of the characters is the major flop that ruined the whole thing. It's so silly and looks absolutely disastrous on the characters that I could not actually go past this fact to enjoy the movie. It is just painful to watch and an insult to my visual senses. This actually reminds me of the make-up in our local flicks "Cinta Kolestrol" and "Hingga Hujung Nyawa". I never would have expected that "Dasavatharam" - which was made with a big budget and with foreign expertise - would ended up to be so daft.

Some may claim that the film's forte is its technical expertise but I just don't see anything to justify so. The production team tried so hard to give it a semblance of a Hollywood action flick but sorry, it didn't work. The whole thing just fell flat. Apart from its catchy songs and decent acting from the cast, there is nothing special or remotely superb about it.

I doubt that this will adversely affect the Kamal Haasan fans, who will nevertheless go in throngs to the cinemas as the actor's branding itself is more than sufficient to draw the audience. But to their credit, I believe that many Tamil movie fans would find that this piece is actually more of an overstatement than one of actual quality.
