Mei Lan Fang was born to a family of Beijing Opera performers in 1894. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the social status of opera performers was equivalent to prostitutes of that time. Although his performance was appreciated by many, his feminine roles received disdain. Due to his outstanding performance, he incurred the wrath of veteran performer Shi Sanyan and a duel is launched between the two. Shi Sanyan was defeated and died, while Mei Lan Fang feared that he would end up the same way.

Not That Enthralling

The story began with the life of the young Mei Lanfang, a rising star finding his own path in the opera scene. The costumes, makeup and cinematography were commendable. However, as the movie progresses further, the story became less engaging and almost dreadful. In the end, I couldn't wait to leave the cinema because it was wayyyy too long. Not that enthralling after all.
