Directed by Simon Sek, "Ghost Buddies" features Hui (Mark Lee), a very kind average Joe who works in a funeral parlor. He finds himself gifted with the ability to communicate with ghosts when he cleanses the deceased. He then embarks on a journey to help three ghosts; Miao Miao (Lim Ching Miau), Uncle Wong (Chow Kee Moo) and Ah Hu (Lenny Ooi) to fulfill their wishes. Eventually, Hui became good friends with the ghosts after three of them help him with his crush, Pearl (Maggie Shiu).
Lee's stiff expression fits very well with Hui's personalities. Every little move he makes is able to make audiences forget of the Singaporean comedian's usual portrayal of "Chou Ah Beng" characters, like what he did in "Money No Enough" and "The Best Bet".
If you are huge fan of Lee and have been steadily following his hilarious performances in the past, "Ghost Buddies" will appear as a disappointment for you when you listen to the voice dubbing of Lee's character. Having a voice artist to replace Lee's trademark voice talents is a rather hasty decision by the production team which seems to bring down the quality of the actor's comedic acting skills.
On the other hand, it is noticeable that the director is trying to mock with Maggie Shiu's Cantonese accent whenever she speaks Mandarin throughout the movie. Nevertheless, this is not really a good idea because the way the veteran actress speaks sounds quite irritating.
The fighting scene between the ghosts is ridiculous and mindless. The characters chase the villainous Golden Lion as if they are running around in a playground.
In conclusion, you can obviously find weaknesses and mistakes in "Ghost Buddies" and it will not be a surprise if you find yourself yawning somewhere in the middle of the movie.
