When four-year-old Amanda McCready goes missing without a trace, her desperate aunt and uncle plead with private investigators Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck) and Angie Genarro (Michelle Monaghan) to take the case. Patrick and Angie are wary because they know the truth about Amanda's drug-addicted mother Helene (Amy Ryan). As they probe the case, they find themselves on a trail that winds into the dark heart of Boston's Dorchester area and a chain of drug-dealers, ex-cons and child abusers. The case ultimately turns into a professional and personal crisis for them.

Most thought provoking movie in a long time

What I loved most: Characters with depth

What I really hated: Title of the movie

I love crime dramas with interesting plots. Gone Baby Gone is full of twists and turns and some action at the right time to keep you engaged throughout the show. Hated the title of this show as it gives little idea on what type of show this is, plus the fact that there was little publicity done, I had to look at a write up of the plot to convince myself that this was a movie worth watching. Perhaps because the show was adapted from a novel, or because Ben Afleck did a great job in directing his first movie, the build up for the characters was superb. There was depth in almost all of the main characters in the show, the pothead mother, his brother and wife, the police commander (Morgan Freeman) and his 2 detectives (Ed Harris & John Ashton) and of course the private eye couple, Casey Afleck and Michelle Monaghan (aka the 2 lead actors). Even the drug lords had personality in the show. The most interesting thing about this show is how people can lose sight of their own visions if they do not hold true to their principles. Toward the end of the show, Casey Afleck had to make a very difficult decision and you will either love him or hate him for it, just like what it did to his partner and girlfriend (I'm not going to spoilt the movie for you by telling you what he did). We can't say for sure if he made the best decision for the child, but I've learnt to stay true to my principles. I will definitely encourage you to watch this film if plots matter to you and you are choosing this or some french movie which ends when you are expecting the next scene.
