In this sequel to "Hellboy" ("Super Sapiens" in Malaysia), an ancient pact existing between humankind and the mythical realm is broken. A ruthless leader treads the world above and the one below defies his bloodline by awakening an unstoppable army of creatures. Joined by members of his team from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development, Hellboy must travel between the surface strata and the magical realm to prevent the resurrection of a mythical "golden army" and save humankind once again.

A visual extravaganza!

What I loved most: Beautiful visual (not visual effects)

What I really hated: A bit boring in some parts

Hellboy 2, unlike other high-budgeted movies, relies heavily on the beauty of the visual throughout the movie. Although the visual effects isn't very good compared to Hancock, Pirates or The Dark Knight, you'll still be amazed by the wildly colorful and amazing make-ups for all of the creatures shown in the film. Guillermo del Toro proves once again to the world that his imagination is like no other directors.

Tentera Emas is here! Oh okay – that's what we would have called Hellboy's posse of supernatural agents if they were in Malay. Hey, at least this time the title didn't get renamed to Super Sapiens, right!

In any case, "The Golden Army" promises an action-packed two hours with the cantankerous, cigar-chomping Hellboy back in the reckoning. A blend of action, humour and romance make up the second instalment, where he returns with bigger muscles and badder weapons, all used to fight the bigger, badder villain. What's the story about? The imminent destruction of humankind, of course. It's up to the red hornless devil to save the day again, together with his pyrokinetic lover Liz (Selma Blair) and his aquatic friend, Abe Sapien.

The Oscar-nominated director Guillermo del Toro (for those of you who caught "The Orphanage" last month) takes the reins and most are hoping that his vision and imagination will take you on a rollercoaster ride filled with cinematic thrills and spills. What viewers will get instead is a clichéd run-of–the-mill action flick, with the only saving grace being its visually stunning blood-splattering and bone-crunching sequences.

Ignoring the corny, del Toro's fantasy take on his even more fantastical world is what keeps the story going. His unique eye for fright and fantasy is what puts him on top of his game. With this gift, it was almost natural that he managed to distract viewers from the bad acting and mediocre script!

That aside, "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army" isn't really all that bad. Del Toro manages to lure us into a mystical, magical world where humans and an assorted bunch of creatures co-exist and keep us there for some time. The action sequences do keep viewers on their toes and there's a bit of humour here and there to lighten up the mood and prevent battle fatigue.

So - who's up for Part 3?
