After years of toiling in supporting rolesoften taking whatever pap came her wayactress Imelda Staunton finally got the chance to display her considerable talents when she starred as the titular character in director Mike Leighs period drama, Vera Drake (2004), a role that earned the British thespian a nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. Born in London, Staunton was educated at La Sainte Union Convent before attending the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and the University of Cambridge. She spent six years plodding through repertory theatre before moving on to the National Theatre, where she won an Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress in Alan Ayckbourns A Chorus of Disapproval.
