Movie Plot

Longtime friends, Ryan (Irwansyah) and Cinta (Acha Septriasa), have just graduated from their senior high school. They are very close but they have not been able to express their feelings for each other. All they have managed to say is "love" which they both interpret as "care", an ambiguous expression at best. Even when Ryan is bound for the United States to continue his studies, they still cannot find the courage to express their true feelings. However, everything changes when tragedy strikes...

Not even worth the cost of a pirated DVD

What I loved most: Acha Septriasa

What I really hated: Everything else

Let me get this right off the bat. This movie is lousy, flawed, with a very simple storyline that has been played many times over (1st that come to mind was Richie Ren/Cecilia Cheung's 1999 HK film "Fly Me To Polaris"). I am just lucky that I borrowed this film from Fitness First (part of the privilege of being a member). That being said, I would like to comment that acting of the beautiful Acha Septriasa. Her portray of a sad girl losing the love of her life is soulful, and it is the only thing I enjoyed in the movie. Watch it if you like Acha Septriasa and want to watch her acting. Otherwise, it is a waste of an hour and a half.

This film is Hanny R. Saputra's second attempt at reuniting real-life lovebirds Acha Septriasa and Irwansyah after last year's Indonesian hit, "Heart". The romance aspect remains atypical but Hanny's latest undertaking falls shamefully short of what it could potentially be. The film tries really hard to copy the poetic justice that was "Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?" (released in 2003) but alas, it remained a joke till the end.

Acha Septriasa proves that if you want something done, ask a woman. She single-handedly outwits and outdoes both male leads (Irwansyah and Raffi Ahmad) as the strong but torn Cinta, who is left heart-broken after the love of her life, Ryan, leaves for the United States without even a murmur of the three magical words ("I love you") she had longed to hear. Confused, she submits to depression without knowing that Ryan had changed his mind at the last minute and raced back to be with her. However, tragedy strikes which makes the situation a little more complex than anyone can handle.

There are spurts of sexuality in the film that ought to be cheeky, but instead translates as highly tacky. When Cinta accidentally snaps an upskirt photo of herself, over-ecstatic Ryan snatches the camera off her hands, climbs up a ledge, peeks at the camera's tiny screen and roars (it was more like laughing and choking at the same time) at the sky with his hands up like an oversexed King Kong. Of course, Cinta found it funny. I just find it distasteful.

The 'spiritual' scenes were fashioned after a child's interpretation of what angels and God should look like. It was so elementary that it felt and looked like it was directed by a nine-year-old. The simplest of things were ignorantly overlooked that after a while, everything became redundant. It was funny when a 'dead' person in one of the scenes was clearly breathing.

Every so often, the camera angles get erratic. In one scene, Cinta stands up to face the camera and the top half of her head careens off the frame. You could only see what's below her eyes. That shot lasted a few seconds.

Here's the cliffhanger - there's a 'flying' scene in the movie. The couple is so happily in love that they begin to float in circles in the air.

So ladies and gentlemen, go watch this if you want to see bald angels dressed in black because frankly, it's amusing.
