Best Comedy of the Year

What I loved most: Realistics Dialogue

What I really hated: None

This movie is one of its kind. Those who does not appreciate this comedy are not from the Malay speaking community. A grasp of the colloquial northern accent needed as this is the background of the movie. Funny dialogues and realistic dramatization of a single father experiance of raising three daughters. Its probe deep into the reality of life of a Jawi Peranakan community which stresses on family values and discipline. The characters are unique as they potray the real aspect of the Jawi Peranakan community which we are shy to expose. Those who understand Malaysian will truly appreciate this comedy. Worth the money to watch.

Professor Razak Mohaideen made a name for himself after leaving Metrowealth Movie Production (MMP) with movies such as "Bujang Senang" and "Anak Mami Kembali" . "Nana Tanjung" tries to follow the same recipe for success but fails to impress, bringing to mind the saying, "Too many cooks spoil the soup."

The movie is about an old widower, Nana (Pak Pie), who has his hands full trying to raise his three daughters in Penang. Akhbar Khan (Saiful Apek) tries to impress Nana in order to get the permission to marry the old man's eldest daughter, and gets himself hired as his bodyguard. However, Nana is approached by Mydin (Pak Mydin) who has found a suitable candidate for his eldest daughter Khairunisa (Fasha Sandha). Can Akhbar convince Nana in time that he is the better man for her?

Consisting of irritating sound effects not heard of since the days of "The Three Stooges", the film seems to be badly patched together. With the usual comedy antics, romantic songs belted out a la Bollywood style, it seems almost like a P.Ramlee movie, minus the legend himself. However, it falls short of success, dragging you along the scenes, boring you with repeated slapsticks (after a while, watching the old man slap everyone's head can get a little tiresome), and having stereotyped characters.

Most irritating was Saiful Apek as Akhbar Khan, with his slapstick antics reminiscent of Jim Carey back during "The Mask" days. Yes, he had his funny moments (look out for the funny repertoire between him and a client at his office in the first 5 minutes of the movie) but it does get tiring when he tries too hard.

The portrayal of Nana as the typical old-fashioned and overprotective dad was spoiled by his abusive nature, slapping his daughters at the back of their heads for every time he was irritated - making you wonder if the reason they are so whiny is because of the brain damage caused in the slapping sessions. What kind of message are we trying to send out to viewers anyway - that it's alright to hit women? The movie loses its funny points at this point.

Most parts of the movie was spoilt more than once by the background music, which was louder than the dialogue.

There are certain times when the lessons of life are mentioned in this film, including an interesting point regarding the original meaning of the word "mamak". The characters centre on the importance of family values, respecting your elders, keeping the culture strong in the young ones and so forth. However, most of this gets lost in the overdramatic acting, and the loud, irrelevant background music. As for the dialogue, it sometimes seemed out of place and irrelevant to the plot of the movie itself.

One has to give credit to the fact that this was filmed in Penang, showing you the rustic parts of Penang town, its beaches and a particular scene on the grounds of a beautiful mosque which was built partly on the sea, after the tragedy of the Tsunami hitting the island.

Overall, a funny movie if you really have nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon and if you happen to be a huge fan of "The Three Stooges" and their usual brand of slapstick.
