What I loved most: The fifth story
What I really hated: Boring storyline that seems to lead to nowhere
I have to admit, I have never watched 4bia, at least not yet. When I knew that there was a Thai horror film screening, I didn't think twice and bought tickets and went to the cinema with my friends to get spooked. Phobia 2 is branched into 5 parts. I will review it one by one. Part 1, "Novice": A young boy who has commited a crime (throwing a rock to a car that cause accidents) has been sent to become a novice. He grudgingly accepts it. Soon, he stumbled upon many weird stuffs. This part is quite...boring, because it is about a Thai legend. I don't really know anything about karma and I don't know this story is related to a legend. Storyline is quite boring but directing is good. Worth watching. 3.5/5 Part 2: "Ward". Nothing to talk about. Not because it is too perfect, but because it is too boring that I dozed off in the cinema. No story at all. This part of film is filmed with an intention to spook audience. Boring. But, as this is the first film directed by the director (I forgot his name), I'm going to say the directing is not bad. Just....have a better storyline, or just invent one. 1.5/5 Part 3: "Backpackers". I haven't watch 28 Weeks Later. Zombies in Thailand definitely sounds fishy, but the film make it like zombies do exist in Thailand. Story is not bad. But the ending....I just hope there will be a Phobia 3. Not a bad film, but quite gory. 3.5/5 Part 4: "Salvage". Secondhand cars. Damn! My mother is driving a secondhand car! This is probably the most scariest story amongst the five, but quite boring. The 25-minute film is all about hide-and-seek. I couldn't resist the urge to leave the cinema and I went out to buy a bottle of mineral water which cost me RM1.80 for a bottle of 600ml. I will never forget this film. The ending is....sad...if I elaborate it will be spoiler. Sorry. 3/5 (for the scary effect). Part 5: "In The End". What to say? Just laugh. This is what we call a Hormedy. This hormedy is definitely better than Where Got Ghost. An actress has died and she returns from the dead to finish her role in the film. Creative thinking. I love it. And the main actress is quite beautiful. (^_^). 4.5/5 In short, this is a good horror film and most probably the best horror movie ever produced in this year. Overall rating: 4/5.

With the success of "4BIA" it's no brainer that a sequel will be made and interestingly enough, "Phobia 2" (Thai title translates as "Five Crossroads") has become the all time highest grossing Thai horror movie on opening day at the box office, breaking all Thai horror records of "Nang Nak", "Shutter" and "Alone". Talk about horror hype! Guess securing sexy Japanese porn star Sora Aoi for the first film made great publicity to kick the franchise off.
Instead re-enacting the same concept of four short stories, it adds an extra one more. Each story is light on gore and rather pays close attention to character and suspense, resulting in an eerie twist at the end.
"Novice", by Paween Purijitpanya, tells of juvenile delinquent Pey (Jirayu Raongmanee) who is sent by his mother to be trained as a Buddist monk. Located at a rural area, his misbehaviour soon clashes with the Hungry Ghost Festival and causes the reawakening of a spirit and the damnation of a soul. This truly is an atmospheric film with plenty of foggy scenes, little dialogue, and a lot of background noise. Karma is the main theme, so think twice before deciding to commit a crime.
Visute Poolvoralaks' "Ward" has Arthit (Worrawech Danuwong) placed in a hospital ward due to a leg injury. Coupled up with a dying leader of a religious cult (Gacha Plienwithi) and you'll have a creepy story ready at your doorstep but with a predictable ending.
"Resident Evil" meets "28 Days Later", Songyos Sugmakanan's "Backpackers" has a hitchhiking Japanese couple who encounters a shocking discovery when a vehicle's cargo is revealed. Resulting in a vicious bloodbath, this is one fast-paced story you might enjoy.
"Salvage," by Parkpoom Wongpoom ("Alone," "Shutter"), has a crammed setting within a used car shop where Thai-American singer Nicole Theriault plays a saleswoman/mother who has suddenly lost her child. Playing around with guilt and dishonesty, the story didn't seem to level up well and by this time, the movie seems draggy.
However, saving the best for last, "In The End" is a hilarious "Scary Movie"-like spoof directed by the man behind "Alone" and "Shutter" Banjong Pisanthanakun. Bringing in the same cast members from "4BIA - In The Middle", Wiwat Krongrasri, Pongsatorn Jongwilas and Kantapat Permpoonpatcharasuk are excellent goofballs working as a movie crew of an upcoming horror called "Alone 2" where Kate (Phijitra Ratsameechawalit) stars as the ghost. It had a pretty interesting ending and is definitely worth the watch.
