A second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit, Luke Wright lives a numbing life of routine beatings and chump change... until the day he blows a rigged fight. As a result, the Russian Mafia murders his wife and leaves Luke to wander the streets of New York destitute and watched. Anyone he develops a relationship with will also be killed. But when he witnesses a frightened 11-year-old Chinese girl, Mei, being pursued by the same gangsters who killed his wife, Luke impulsively jumps to action... and straight into the heart of a deadly high-stakes war. Mei, he discovers, is no ordinary girl, but an orphaned math prodigy forced to work for the Triads as a "counter." He discovers she holds in her memory a priceless numerical code that the Triads, the Russian mob and a corrupt faction of the NYPD will kill for. Realizing he's the only person Mei can trust, Luke tears a swath through the city's brutal underworld to save an innocent girl's life and perhaps even redeem his own.

Shot by director Boaz Yakin ("Remember The Titans" & "Hostel"), this movie sees Statham ("The Transporter" & "The Expendables") as Luke Wright, a former secret agent who becomes a second rate cage fighter with specialties in martial arts. His life as a fighter takes a turn for the worst when he gets involved in a fixed match with an inexperienced fighter, who then falls into a coma upon being knocked out by Luke. As a result, the rigged fight causes dissatisfaction among a Russian Mafia who decides to teach Luke a lesson with a tragic accident resulting in Luke protecting a 12-year-old girl and exerting his vengeance upon the mafia.
This movie bears a lot of similarity to other Statham's movies in terms of the fight scenes which is probably due to Statham's personal connection with martial arts in real life, having studied the art of Wing Chun, Kung Fu, Karate, and Kickboxing. Another trademark factor for most of Statham's movies is the grittiness and elements of realism his own stunts exudes due to the actor performing most of the complicated stunts himself.
Apart from that, although the movie does not feature a lot of big names, "Safe" still has an uncertain appeal to it, or je ne sais quoi as some may put it. Unlike Statham's previous roles in "Killer Elite", "Chaos", or even "Death Race" where his role seems rather stiff, his character as Luke Wright has a lot of heart in it. Not only that, albeit the fairly routine and laughable preposterous storyline, this film certainly displays some punch in terms of its reliably solid, ass kicking performance by Jason Statham. Having some pretty witty and funny cheesy one liners certainly helps to liven up the mood of the film.
Although the visual effects are nothing to shout about, it would still leave audiences at the edge of their seats with explosive and sometimes gory stunts. Do watch this if you are a fan of Jason Statham and fast action packed films.
