Alone

What I loved most: Marsha Wathanapanitch ;)

What I really hated: Cliche ghost in the mirror scene

I must confess that the main reason why I watch this movie is the lead acctress Marsha Wathanapanitch. However, apart from the main actress' attraction aside the film really delivers in term of its story line and acting by the casts. Riding on the success of their earlier colloboration "Shutter", the directors-producers team really deliver with this new offering. The film tells about Pim who return to Thailand from Korea togetehr with her husband Pim upon receiving news that her mother has been hospitalised due to stroke. While staying at her childhood home, strange things started to happen - reflection in the mirror, stranger on the bed etc. All these happening reminds Pim of her conjoined twin sister Ploy who didn't survive an "operation" to saparate them earlier own. Upon consulting a phsychaterist, it was concluded that all those sightings are a result of Pim's guilt feeling towards her dead twin and would be over once she return to Korea. However, a dark secret was revealed when Pim was making the necessary arrangement for their return to Korea... The twist at the end of the film is something that I can sense from the film's beginning. However, the combination of horror and thriler in the film was nicely done.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End

What I loved most: CGIs and the monkey

What I really hated: Chow Yun-fat character - stereotyping of Asian in Hollywood films

In this 3rd instalment of the Disneys's Pirates triology (and probably the final one), Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann with the help of Capt Barbossa (who were brought back to life in the final scene of Pirates 2) were on quest to rescue Capt Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones' curse of mind-altering imprisonment at the world's end. In order to reach the world's end, they need to pursuade Singapore pirate Capt Sao Feng to join them. To make things more complicated, Lord Beckett of the East India Company (EIC) and Davy Jones as well were trailing them. With such a complicated cat and mouse situation, there were lots of sea-battle in this movie apart from the usual betrayals and treacheries among the characters. Computer-generated visuals were used extensively in this movie with that "wow" effect but it was real acting by Capt' Barbossa's monkey that always stole the limelight. Being Asian I feel that Chow Yun-fat's Capt Sao Feng character was just so-so and stereotyping the Asian baddies image in Hollywood movies. It was an enjoyable watch nevertheless though I don't really care if another sequel will be made soon by the producer.

Ghost Tunnel

What I loved most: Value of family and freindship featured in the movie

What I really hated: The tunnel ghosts - not scary at all

Another based-on-urban-legend-ghost-in-the-tunnel story, but the film is way much better then the Indonesian flick Terowongan Casablanca that I watched earlier this year. The story begins with the disappearence of a boy who found a train pass at a train station's terminal. Legend has it that who ever found the belongings of the so call ghost tunnel will either die or disappear. When a little girl Noriko found the same train pass and later disappeared, her sister Nana vowed to trace her even on her own accord. With the help of her new found freind Kanae and a suspended train driver, the trio try to solve the mystery of the ghost tunnel and bring back Noriko.Scary part aside, the film is all about family value and freindship - a sister determination to save her sister, a freind's sacrifice and a mother's love to her child. Personally, I also started to ponder about this urban legend. Just before watching the movie, I found an employee tag belongs to a girl at the mall. Coincidently, I also have to take the often deserted last train home after the movie. But nothing wrong happened - maybe because I returned the tag to girl immediatley? Things might be different if I decided just to keep the tag instead....

Waris Jari Hantu

What I loved most: The soundtrack

What I really hated: The guardian tiger - could be better using advance CG

Based on local folkfore of "Rimau Datuk" (a guardian spirit in the form of tiger), the film is about Tok Wan Rimau who is looking for a female heir to be the next custodian of the tiger spirit. Tok Wan would like her granddaughter Tina to be the next heir of the tiger spirit though her family wasn't agree with this. Tina, meanwhile is madly in love with her cousin Ari eventhough he is an effiminate sissy guy. Ari then moved to Singapore and returned back as Arina after a sex change operation. Though devastated, Tina finaly accepted the facts that the man that she loves is now a woman. Arina, on the other hand, is willing to replace Tina as the female heir for Tok Wan's tiger spirit. Despite the "jari hantu" (literally ghost finger) title, this is not a horror movie. The jari hantu here is in reference to the middle finger as what it is called in Malay. This mystical film is more about unconditional loves and family values - something that make you ponder how far you will go to sacrifice for someone that you love? The theme songs and soundtrack of this movie are also memorable, really capture the mood.

Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer

What I loved most: The CGI effects

What I really hated: Sue Storm's hairdo

I didn't watched the first F4 when it was released in 2005, probbaly because of the bad review back then. What made me decided to watch this sequel is the Silver Surfer itself from the movie's trailer - it was really cool. I wasn't really dissapointed since there are lots of CGI and special effects throughout the movie right from the beginning, and that's about it. Storywise, it is a simple strory line with the F4 superheroes adjusting their lives with their new found superpowers. Enter the Silver Surfer who is causing strange weather phenomenan all over the world. On top of that, Dr Doom - the villain in the first movie - also re-appeared and offer to co-operate with the F4 camp. Overall, the film is all about good triupmhed over evil, teamwork and the power to make decision.

Shrek 3

What I loved most: Good animation, funny one liners

What I really hated: The annoying metrosexual Prince Charming

In this third installment, the loveable green ogre and troupe return for more actions and laughable moments. With the passing of his father in law, Shrek is destined to be the new King of Far Far Away land. To avoid this, Shrek need to find Fiona's cousin Arthur who is the next in line heir for the throne. Problem is, Arthur is a clumsy young boy without any leadership qualities who is also reluctant to be the king. During the absence of Shrek and his buddies, Prince Charming - who now form an alliance with the baddies and villains of fairy tales - return to Far Far Away land to create havoc and claim the throne. Now, it is up to the pregnant Princess Fiona and her bimbotic fellow princesses (Cinderella, Snow White & Sleeping Beauty) to defend the Kingdom while waiting for Shrek's return. Overall, it is an enjoyable movie though not as good as its prequels. The same victory of the underdog theme is still an essence to this movie just like the earlier instalments.
