Twilight

Three things i was absolutely positive. 1. Robert Pattinson was over-rated as Edward Cullen. I expected much more charm and charisma when he first appeared on screen but that didn't happen. In fact, Carlisle Cullen caught my attention. 2. The baseball scene and Carlisle Cullen were the best and most accurate representation of the book. 3. Kristen Stewart CAN act.

Bolt

Bolt is the kind of film whereby you will find it incredibly nice on the first watch but bland and boring on the subsequent watch. The problem lies in the story. The charms of the cute dog or teenage superstar Miley Cyrus couldn't make up for the lengthy script which tries to incorporate too much of emotional development. Had the script been sharper and more condensed, this film will be enjoyable anytime.

Ip Man (hkff)

I never thought i would enjoy a kung fu fighting flick this much. But Ip Man captivated me. The best credits of this film is of course, the fighting scenes. Close-up shots of the fast paced fighting sequence were perfectly captured and visually stunning. Donnie Yen displays a well controlled character that finely balances seriousness and comedy.

Yes Man

While most critics are slamming Jim Carrey over his over-the-top acting, i give him a round of a applause. The antics that he pulls off in this film is certainly not new/refreshing, but he displays a new level of depth rarely seen in his works. As a man who comes full circle in understanding himself, Carrey nailed the character well. There were plentiful of funny moments that will surely make you burst out laughing. Not altogether refreshing, but tasteful nonetheless.

Angus, Thongs And Perfect Snogging

Go watch this with the mindset of a 14/15 year old and you will definitely enjoy this gem. Sharp and witty in the acute observations about the dilemmas of teenagers, this film will strike a chord or two in you as it is probably what you have once been through yourself. A lovely soundtrack that effectively captures the mood is a must to take note of.

Painted Skin

It's really very difficult to imagine a movie that has its roots in two very different genres; romance and horror fantasy. But here we have a film that blends these two genres beautifully into a tale that is coherent and nonetheless fantastic to watch. Surely there are a lot of main characters (six to be exact) that will leave you dazzled for a moment, but i find myself transfixed on only two: Zhou Xun and Zhao Wei. Both of their characters represents conventional love notions, that of sacrificing for their loved one (played by Chen Kun), which provides the romance element here. Zhou captivates in a convincing portrayal of a fox demon longing for the love of one man whereas Zhao, hands in a credible performance as the quiet demure wife who is willing to sacrifice all for love. Wonderful visuals and a sentimental music accompliment completes this romantic-horror-fantasy movie that will (at the very least) leave you touched.
