Taken

There is nothing impressive about the plot of a father trying to save his daughter that was kidnapped by baddies, in fact it is predictable! Taken's plot is not unlike the movie Hostage starring Bruce Willis who has to save his kidnapped family or the plot in one of the Die Hard instalments. Likewise in Taken, the plot is similar and that the daughter in question here has been taken and forced into a prostitution ring. Unfortunately for the baddies, Liam Neeson was a sort of a retired special agent of sorts and with some help from past friends and colleagues, tracks down, kills and rescues his daughter. However, what I liked was the clever smarts and the hard fighting tactics used in this movie (not unlike those found in the Bourne trilogy). The moves were sharp and hardhitting, unforgivingly violent and deeply satisfying. it was also strangely entrancing following each step of finding the whereabouts of the missing daughter that kept me riveted in my seat. Taken is for you if you like movies such as Bourne Supremacy and those I have listed in my review.

Knowing

When a piece of paper filled with numbers lands up with a boy after being dug out from a time capsule buried 50 years ago, his father manages to dechiper what the numbers mean. Nicholas Cage plays the father who with his knowledge of a few impending disasters set forth trying to prevent them from happening and find out why they are happening. Knowing does provide the intrigue and mystery of an impending end of the world movie. The story is not bad although somewhat predictable. The disaster scenes however was so real, it was terrifying and memorable. The movie was well paced and never a dull moment. Entertaining movie.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic

What I loved most: Rebecca's dance scene

You don't need to read the books to understand and enjoy Confessions. It was thoroughly enjoyable and funny with quirky and funny performances and lines. Isla Fisher portaryal of Rebecca was hilarious without being over-campy and slapstick. Our lead is clearly a shopaholic that has a debt problem. When one of the top fashion magazine has a position to be filled, she decides to try for the position only to find out that it has been filled as she side-tracked to purchase a green scarf! However, she was informed by the friendly receptionist that to get to the top fashion magazine, she should try getting a position in Successful Savings, a money/financial periodical and slowly climb her way up, being under the same parent company. She then ironically ends up writing for the financial magazine and falls in love with the editor, Hugh Dancy. However hot on her tail is the city debt collector trying to collect money owed from her frivolous spending, as Rebecca finds hereself making her way up the ranks of the magazine and through life. From funny counselling groups to warm and heart warming frinedships to plenty of fashion watching, Confessions has a little bit of everything for everyone. Being a light-hearted rom-com, there was a moment that struck me was when Rebecca's father (ie. John Goodman) told her that it was not material things but the people who he cared and loved that defines him. Confessions is one for all boyfriends should bring their partners to watch for a good funny laugh but beware a shopping trip might be in order after the movie!

The Unborn

What I loved most: Checking out the medical cabinet

What I really hated: The ending

You know it's not a good sign when the audience in the hall laughs at a horror film, which is what happened for a few times. The movie starts with Casey taking a jog when she finds starting to see spectres in the form of a boy and his masked dog (laugh!). What follows is more hauntings and the resolve to find out why she is seeing stuff and hauntings and if these had to do with her own mother's death in a mental facility. The Unborn provides eye-candy by casting 2 pretty faces, Odette and Cam. However, the film is also laden of horror film cliches such as mirrors, little boys, opened jaws monsters and dead mothers. Unfortunately I did not find this movie too scray and the body count clearly disappoints. I also did not like the ending as it feels that there was no closure and unresolved. Even with Gary Oldman in a supporting role couldn't help improve the movie. Wait for the DVD if you need to watch something with a good scare.

The Punisher: War Zone

What I loved most: Opening scene, blood and gore

What I really hated: Blood & gore

Didn't manage to catch this while it was screened but managed to catch it recently on DVD. Let me tell u that this movie made me squirm more then The Unborn which I caught earlier this evening. Story of how Frank Castle, an ex-cop, and his family was caught in a mob killing resulting in the demise of his wife and kids. Snapped, he became the one-man vigilante war machine against mob families. However, during one such killing spree, Punisher kills an undercover. He also maanges to throw the mob leader, Billy into an industrial machine mixer full of glass bottles whom survived and reincarnates as the Jigsaw. Seeking revenge, the Jigsaw enlists the help of his brother, Looney Bin James. Meanwhile the Punisher tries to make good to the undercover cop's family who he accidentally kills and soon they and the Punisher's friends soon becomes the Jigsaw's targets and victims. The movie starts with unadulterated violence, blood and gore which is definitely a pleaser if you are into such scenes. Decapitation and bone-breaking are also orders for the day. Ray Stevenson looks uncannily like the Punisher but I still doubt the casting choice as these marvel characters need big names to carry the franchise on (eg, Robert Downey Jr as Ironman, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine). Just see how the previous one starring Thomas Jane (which was not bad) fade into oblivion. Entertaining show but not suitable for the kids.

Coming Soon

Following some really horrifying Thai horror films such as Shutter and 4bia, Coming Soon hardly matched those of its predecessors, plot wise and in terms of scares. What I liked was the twist in the plot but there were several glaring loopholes which could have resulted from editing that marred my expereince. If you think a story of how a person gets killed after watching a movie sounds vaguely like The Ring, do try to catch it and be surprised how the story turns out. Interesting to use the cineme theatre as the background/scene when ones watching the movie in a hall themselves. Otherwise, this movie is recommended to be "adopted" by IPOS in the light of the heavy anti-film piracy message.
